Tryout Information

Are you thinking about trying out in the spring? Tryouts are held once a year, usually somewhere around the end of April. Keep checking back at this page for information as it becomes available. Here is some information you need to know:

Tryout Date: April 27, 2008
Check-In: GRW 266 @ 8:00 AM!!!
Bring your insurance with you to the tryout
You must be enrolled at Texas A&M University at the time of tryouts.
You must have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPR at the time of tryouts.
Couples try out together and make the team together.
If you need help finding a partner try our Dance Partner Database.
Our classes are not required, but couples trying out in the past have found Jitterbug I,Jitterbug II, and C&W II helpful.
If you plan on attending mock tryouts or tryouts please review the list below of approved Tryout Jitterbug Moves. The moves on the list are the only ones that have been approved by Student Activities for non-wranglers. The reason for limiting moves is to ensure saftey and give everyone trying out an equal opportunity.
At least one member of each couple must attend one of our tryout informational meetings. These can take place separately or right before a mock tryout. If you are unable to attend any of the informationals or mock tryouts, please contact us at tryouts@aggiewranglers.com ASAP.
Membership Applications Due: April 23, 2008 5:00 PM
Each person trying out is required to turn in an individual typed application for membership. This means that you and your partner will fill out separate applications. You can turn this in to the Aggie Wranglers cube found in the Koldus Building.

An optional pre-tryout BBQ will be held on the Friday before try-outs. All couples trying out are encouraged to come. This year it will be:
    Date: April 25, 2008
    Time: 6:00 PM
    Location: Thomas Park
Mock try-outs are held throughout the spring semester for anyone that is interested in finding out what try-outs will be like. Current Aggie Wranglers will be on hand to give advice to the couples that come. There will be a $10 per couple ($5 per person) one time fee to attend mock tryouts. There will be two mock try-outs on the following dates:
    Date: March 6th, 2008
    Time: 9:00 to 11:00 PM
    Location: READ 401

    Date: April 17th, 2008
    Time: 9:00 to 11:00 PM
    Location: GRW 266
You will need to come prepared to demonstrate your ability to two step and polka (all turns and floor moves). You will also be asked to jitterbug to a three minute jitterbug song. After each of these demonstrations you will be assisted by current wranglers and they will give you tips on what to concentrate on improving for the actual tryouts. We will also be posting more information as it becomes available.
Here are some polka, two-step, and jitterbug songs that can help you gain a perspective as to what songs are generally for which step. Due to copyright, we cannot distribute these songs but we can point in the right direction. Good luck and have fun dancing!
  • Polka
    • Fightin' Texas Aggie - Highway 6
    • Neon Moon - Brooks & Dunn
    • I'm Still Here - Pat Green
    • Dust on the Bottle - David Lee Murphy
    • Tight Fittin' Jeans - Conway Twitty

  • Two Step
    • 1000 Miles From Nowhere - Dwight Yoakum
    • Easy Come, Easy Go - George Strait
    • Don't Rock the Jukebox - Alan Jackson
    • Amen Kind of Love - Daryle Singletary
    • Small Town Saturday Night - Hal Ketchum

  • Jitterbug
    • Boogie Til The Cows Come Home - Clay Walker
    • Cadillac Ranch - Chris LeDoux
    • Born To Boogie - Hank Williams Jr.
    • Trouble - Travis Tritt
    • Ain't Goin' Down ('Til The Sun Comes Up) - Garth Brooks
As a general rule, you can two step to any polka song if you would really like to but it does not always work the other way around. You will not be able to polka to every two step song. Also, you should not two step or polka to the jitterbug songs listed as they are too fast and more difficult to maintain smoothness.
